Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace

Changing of the guardsBuckingham Palace has been the official home of the royal family since 1837. Many of the State rooms inside Buckingham palace are open to visitors during August and September.

If you see the Royal Standard flag flying over Buckingham palace you know that the Queen is in residence when the Queen is away from the Palace the Union Jack is flown instead.

The Changing of the Guard takes place at the front forecourt of Buckingham Palace and marches along the Mall toward the Palace. These ceremonial guards are real serving soldiers who have the responsibility of serving and protecting the sovereign.

The Changing of the Guard is the process in which a new guard exchanges duty with the the old guard. The soldiers of the Guard are drawn from one of the five regiments of Foot Guards in the British Army which comprise of the Scots Guards, Irish Guards, Welsh Guards, the Coldstream Guards and the Grenadier Guards.

During the handover or Changing of the Guards military bands play vibrant music and not just traditional military music they even play popular songs and other music.

The changing of the Guard takes place daily between June and July, during August the change takes place every three days and every other day during September.

The nearest London Underground stations are Green Park, Hyde Park Corner, St. James's Park and Victoria.
